Children out to save our World was a theme as youngsters from Greenfylde First School, Neroche Primary and St Bartholomew’s First School came together for the annual Ilminster Rotary Public Speaking Competition for 4 to 10 year olds Young Voices. Started five years ago, the competition gives younger children the chance to talk on a given topic for 2 minutes. This year the theme was, ‘How can we look after our World for future generations?’ and all the finalists showed a wealth of ideas ranging from cleaning up our seas and oceans, planting trees to support habitats to sharing a smile and kindness to make the World a better place. Claire Oaten, Headteacher at Greenfylde who organises this competition commented, ‘Every year the standard seems to get higher and higher and all of us watching and judging were impressed by the confidence shown by these children. If this is any indication of our future citizens then we clearly have some amazing young people who have the attitude and ability to look after our World and help teach and support future generations.’
First prizes in each category went to Neroche Primary with runners up from Neroche Primary and St Bartholomew’s First School.
