It was great to see so many families access our Harvest worship via Zoom in October.  We had over 100 zoom windows and multiple people of all ages within the worship, in fact it was such a success that we needed to hold the service twice!

Please do also look at the curriculum areas for English and Maths within the website which we hope will provide you with further guidance on how we teach these subjects.  There are Youtube links to Times Table to help with the learning of these.  Children also have access to TT Rockstars and Purple Mash to enhance their learning.

Also, please have a look at the Class Newsletters above which will contain information about your child’s learning. This term we will continue to use the outdoors a lot and swimming will take place in September and October in our school pool. We also have events such as Victorian Day, Children in Need, No Pens Day and a range of Christmas events planned for Autumn B.

Within English we are studying two books this term.  A comic book related to the Ancient Greeks in Autumn A and a story entitled ‘Leon and the Place Between’ during Autumn B.  We will focus on the core sentence construction skills whilst adding description, paragraphing and other punctuation forms to their writing.

Within Maths, we are focusing on the place value of numbers to 10,000 and refining our written methods for addition and subtraction whilst continuing to consolidate our times tables and recalling number facts.  To help increase enthusiasm to learn times tables we are subscribed to TT Rockstars.  Each class are involved in a weekly KS2 competition and all pupils in each class work together to gain points for their class with certificates printed each week to show the Top 3 classes in KS2 and individuals within each class. This is a weekly homework task to help the children prepare for their Y4 times table assessment in the summer of that year.

Across the rest of the curriculum we will examine the Ancient Greeks and focus on locational Geography including Counties, Countries and Continents as well as Time Zones and important cities. In Science we are studying both Animals (including teeth, digestive system and food chains) and Sound, in Art and DT we are studying Matisse and designing our own bread and in RE we are exploring the Creation Story and the Trinity. Music has been related to Reggae and French has covered a wide range of areas including food, numbers to 20 and greetings.

Coker Class: Autumn Term 2021

Coker class have been really busy recently looking at lots of exciting things. We researched famous people for Black History Month; took part in some team building activities for Young Leaders and have written some thoughtful haiku poems as part of Remembrance. Don’t worry – we have also found some time to practise our times tables, addition abs subtraction methods AND study the Greeks and a fabulous book called Leon and the Place Between.

As always, if you are unsure of anything, please contact your child’s class teacher either via Class Dojo or through the school office and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Coopers Class: Autumn Term 2021

We have been working hard in Coopers class learning about lots of exciting topics. After exploring famous Greek Myths in English, we created some fascinating (if not slightly scary!) mythological creatures which then became the stars of our very own Greek myths!  We have been putting lots of effort into the TT Rockstars competition with the other KS2 classes and are working hard on addition and subtraction. In Science, we conducted an eggshell experiment and also learnt about different types of teeth through the power of marshmallows!

Our weekly swimming lessons have been a huge success and concluded with our very own mini class swimming gala in which Barrington house were victorious. We were lucky to have a cricket coach visiting us weekly which has hugely improved our cricket skills – we may have a couple of future cricketers in Coopers class!  To celebrate Roald Dahl Day, we shared our favourite stories with a Year 1 class. We also entered the Ilminster Umbrella Competition and cheered our classmates on during the parade! We loved sharing our Harvest Festival performance with all of the families via Zoom and created special prayer boats to send to COP 26 with our wishes for the planet’s future. We have lots of exciting times ahead in the build-up to Christmas – we can’t wait for our first Forest School adventure, Victorian Day and our Christmas play!

Morgan Class: Autumn Term 2021

What an exciting start to Year Three we have had! We have been really enjoying our English lessons, the comic book style Ancient Greek myths were an absolute hit in Morgan class. The thing we enjoyed most was acting them out; we have some very talented (and dramatic) young actors in our midst. Our favourite story was ‘Pandora’s box’, we were very good at drawing parallels between this myth and the creation story we looked at in RE lessons. We discussed how eating the apple and opening the box had similar effects. During maths, we have used the equipment throughout the term and are now showing a fantastic understand of the place value of three digit numbers. Using our knowledge we moved onto adding and subtracting these as well. We have also enjoyed learning about the human body in science and the Ancient Greeks in history. Our favourite part of science was becoming a body and acting out all of the different parts of the digestive system. We are really looking forward to the next half term. Mrs House, Mrs Oakerbee and Natalie.

Gatcombe Class: Autumn Term 2021

This term we have so far had many exciting times! We included lots of role play within our English work when studying a range of Ancient Greek Myths such as Pandora’s Box and Medusa. As you can see we have been working hard to get in the top 3 KS2 classes for our TT Rockstars competition and have been recently working with place value counters and charts to understand the processes happening within addition and subtraction of 4 digit numbers, ready for our written methods later in the term. We went swimming weekly during September and October where Coach Bob said that he was amazed with the improvements in confidence in the water. Mr Ashdown has been teaching us about the Ancient Greeks in History as well as Sound in Science whilst also exploring types of graphs and statistics in Maths. During November and December we are studying a book called ‘Leon and the Place Between’ as well as locating countries and cities in an atlas and learning about Sound in Science. Mr Lewis and Emma.
